Boat Diving Tips For Beginners
You can always pick out the new person on the block. He/she is a comedy of errors
his/her first time on a boat dive. There is no substitute for experience, but
a little common sense goes a long way and will make your first time an enjoyable
event. Follow these eight simple tips and look like a pro your first time out.
1. Always follow the captain's instructions. The safety of the passengers
and the safe operation of the boat are in his/her hands.
2. Don't board
the vessel until told to do so. Just because it looks ready to board doesn't make
it so. Ask what to do if you don't know.
3. Always stow your gear and
put it in the proper place. You don't want to trip over your gear bag or have
any one else stumble over it.
4. Never leave a tank unsecured. A dropped
tank could mean a broken toe.
5. Listen up when the divemaster or captain
addresses the group and know the lingo. Don't miss vital information and put yourself
or others at risk. You can expect a roll call upon boarding, a boat briefing,
a dive briefing, and an after dive roll call and briefing.
6. Gear up
as the divemaster directs you to. If you weren't listening you are bound to make
mistakes. Don't get left behind.
7. Always leave one hand free for balancing.
You never know when the boat is going to bounce or rock and you may need to steady
yourself.
8. Walking with fins is difficult and dangerous. Put them on
as close to the entry point as possible.
