| Canon Quebrada Brazil beach Travel Information
Canoa Quebrada, in State of Ceará's West
Coast, is its most known beach. This former fishermen little town is, nowadays,
a wonderful a famous beach and is only 160 km from Fortaleza. Our partner Eco
Adventure Tours takes you there
The Village of Canoa Quebrada is located in the district of Aracati and it offers visitors several leisure options.
During the day, besides the beautiful beach, there is plenty of shade and the
service of many thatched-roofed, carnauba wood kiosks that line the beach. There
are also many dune buggy rides over the sand dunes, “skibunda” (rides down high
dunes on boards), sea rafts, horses, "parajipe" (paragliders pulled by jeeps),
"banana boats" and many souvenir shops. There are many inns for all tastes, and
several restaurants that offer diverse specialties, with flexible hours. There
is also a very lively nightlife with nightclubs that stay open from 11:30PM to
sunrise. Over the past years, an urbanization project has changed the villages
look. The main street, called Broadway, has been paved and began to concentrate
most of the novelties and attractions. The beach in turn conserved sections without
houses or stands, attracting many foreign tourists, especially in August
Canoa Quebrada is not just another beach, it became a legend during the
70’s when the beach was discovered by the hippies. It was considered (in Brazil
and abroad) as one of the most gorgeous places in the world. The site is located
156km southeast of Fortaleza and has coconut trees, creeks, high dunes of fine
white sand, lagoons amid the dunes in certain periods of the year, reefs on the
beach and a large row of reddish cliffs which became a symbol of the place. In
1981, the Brazilian composer Caetano Veloso recorded a song called “Lua e Estrela”
(moon and star), a great hit among alternative youths of that time (70’s). Soon
afterwards, inspired by this song, someone carved a moon and a star in the cliffs
– the symbol was created. In Canoa Quebrada you can nowadays find several options
of accommodations and restaurants in the picturesque village.
Basic information
The region’s climate is less dry semi-arid. The average annual temperature is
around 24ºC – with an average annual high of 32ºC, and a low of 21ºC. The sun
is present almost all year long, with rains only between March and May.
Attractions Majorlândia It is 12 km from Aracati, in the middle
of a dense grove of palm trees. Access is easy over a paved road. It has many
beach kiosks as well as restaurants that serve shellfish as their main dish. During
the day, besides the beaches, there are also dune buggy and banana boat rides,
and much more. At the end of the day, a beautiful sunset can be observed from
the top of Urubu Hill.
Cajazeiras Cavern It is 40 km (25
mi) from Aracati. There are three caverns located in a large area with rock formations.
Access is difficult, making the place an excellent option for adventure sport
tourism. Do not go there without first contacting the Aracati Secretary for the
Environment and Tourism and hiring the services of a guide.
Cruz
das Almas Located in the south entrance to Aracati, the monument is a
brick column topped with a cross. It was built in memory of the slaves who died
on the site where there was a whipping post. In the past, the people used to pray
the rosary or novenas and make pilgrimages to Cruz das Almas. On these nights,
it would be illuminated with colored lanterns and candles from the devout promise
keepers.
Shopping In Majorlânida – labyrinth lacework and
bottles with various designs made from the colored sands that can be acquired
in the city's souvenir shops. It is also possible to buy sculptures made by Toinho
de Carneiro, a local artist.
