France Ajaccio beach Travel Information
Ajaccio's greatest claim to fame is Napoleon Bonaparte who was born here in 1769. There are numerous museums dedicated to Ajaccio's hero and on August 15th every year the town celebrates his birthday in style.
Ajaccio (pronounced Azhaksiä in French, Ayácho in Italian), the largest town in Corsica, lies half-way down the west coast of the island in the Gulf of Ajaccio, surrounded by mountains which have a covering of snow right into summer. The town was founded by the Genoese in 1492, and is the capital of Corsica. Its harbor is second in size only to that of Bastia and it also has an airport. Its situation, beautiful beaches and mild climate (average winter temperature 13.3 C/56 F) attract large numbers of visitors.
Ajaccio is a pleasant town to discover with narrow shaded streets and a beach that is backed by a tree-lined promenade. The port bustles with activity and if you wander along the quayside to the Jetee de la Citadelle you'll be rewarded with great views of the town, marina and the Golfe d'Ajaccio.
From the Jetee you'll also be able to hop on a boat to the stunning Iles Sanguinaires, which seen from the shores of Ajaccio turn red as the sun sets (hence the name Bloody Islands). The island is also known for its huge colony of seagulls.
The daily market in the old town of Ajaccio is the ideal opportunity to indulge yourself - try some of the many fine pastries, cheeses and liqueurs on sale here.
here is the beach of Capo di feno at 15 km east of ajaccio. The road you take to go there is interesting, nice landscapes around.. You have the choice of the coast road ( D111) or the road in the middle of little mountains ( D11 and D116)
