Hawaii Anaehoomalu Beach Guide
Anaehoomalu Beach, backed by hundreds of palm trees and, is famed for its breathtaking sunsets. This is one of many beautiful beaches on Kona's Kohala Coast. Graceful coconut palms line the westward facing beach, and tranquil fish ponds lie directly behind the beach. The beach itself is nice, with white sand and good swimming and there are several small coves along the coast which are almost always empty. The shallow waters of the bay are also shared by a myriad of boats coming ashore and anchoring. Some of the best Hawaiian sunsets are viewed from Anaehoomalu Bay.
This lovely beach is perfect for swimming, diving and snorkeling and is fairly well protected from strong surf due to the offshore reef.
Inland from the beach is a large ancient Hawaiian fishpond. The pond was used for raising mullet for the royalty and ali'i of the times. The pond is ringed by beautiful palm trees and makes for a picturesque sunset photo opportunity. There are also educational plaques along the trail surrounding the pond area.
A shoreline trail leads between resort hotels and extends from the Outrigger Waujikia all the way to the Hilton Waikoloa. This long and beautiful trail winds among lava, sand, coral and tidepools.
Numerous resort facilities are available here including rentals, restaurants and a canoe club.
How to Get There
Anaehoomalu bay is approximately 18 miles north of Kona international airport and about 27 miles from Kona. From various major international airports you can get to Kona and by ground travel you can get to Anaehoomalu bay. If you have booked your hotel or resort in advance then they will provide you courtesy pick up and drop to airport. Many private operators are also available to help you get to your final destination.
When to Go
The weather around the beach is almost consistent year round; no major change can be observed. Here only two seasons are observed, summer and winter. In summer, the temperature remains around 85 F and in winter is about 75 F or so. You can visit this place any time as per your choice.
Food
You will get nice food all around the beach. You will find plenty of restaurants and a large assortment of stores where all your needs will be satisfied. There is a wide variety of food to choose from. You can find seafood, continental food, etc. easily and also at economical rates at various places along the beach. You will also find American, Chinese cuisine, Asian and other dishes too. You can even enjoy fast food, if you wish. There are also good coffee shops where you get finest quality Kona coffee.
Accommodation
There are a couple of large resorts and good hotels to stay at. Waikoloa Marriott Resort area is one of these resort area having its own crescent beach and coral lagoons man-made by the resort. You can enjoy swimming and snorkeling. It has its own 36 hole golf course, six tennis courts, and other such facilities to give you a luxurious stay.
Attractions
Here, one of the best attractions is to watch the sunset, which is a very popular and breathtaking event. You may also enjoy many other activities like swimming; the water here is very calm so it is easy for people of all ages and fitness levels to go swimming, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, boating, or scuba diving.

Calm waters allow you and your family to swim, snorkel, and enjoy the day. If you look closely, you will often find Hawaiian sea turtles swimming in the shallows, particularly at the South end of the bay. There is plenty of shade from the tall palm trees so you can relax here all day. In the early evening, this is a wonderful place to catch the splendid sunsets of the Kona coast. Just off of the beach is a scenic lagoon surrounded by palm trees, making a nice sunset photo. If you are looking for food or shopping, there are several restaurants and a large assortment of stores in the Waikoloa resort area. Public parking, rest rooms and showers are available on location. From the parking area there is a paved trail taking you to the beach area. This beach is baby stroller accessible.
Anaehoomalu graces a couple of large resorts and slightly north but within the Waikoloa Resort complex is the extraordinary Hilton complex with its man-made white-sand crescent beach and coral lagoons that are ideal for family swimming and snorkeling.
