Hawaii Kaanapali Maui Beach Guide

This is one of the best beaches on Maui. It fronts most of the Ka'anapali resorts. There is a concrete path that runs the entire length of the beach from Black Rock to the Hyatt. Black Rock is a popular area that divides the beach in half and is renowned for terrific snorkeling.

Voted the Best Hawaiian Beach and over 3 miles long Kaanapali Beach is located on the island of Maui in the state of Hawaii. Black Rock, a lava formation splits the beach in half. The submerged lava rock is nearly covered in coral, and a large variety of turtles and fish call it home, making snorkeling around the rock legendary.

The main Kaanapali Beach area was developed as a totally planned Golf Resort, Beach Resort, Hotel, Condominium, Timeshare and Shopping community. Surfing, swimming, sailing and snorkeling are examples of activities at the beach. Golfing and Whaler’s Village with shopping, dining, museums and galleries are a small example of what entertainment the community holds in addition to the great beach.

Ka'anapali Beach runs from Canoe Beach in the south to Black Rock in the north. A central section of the beach is also called Dig Me Beach. With luxury resort hotels lining the entire beach, this is exactly the sort of place you might imagine when you think of a high-priced beach vacation. Chaise lounges and cabanas dot the beach, and cabana boys scurry to and fro to satisfy the needs of the hotel guests. Ka'anapali is all about the money-- if you don't have it, you're not staying here-- but you can certainly still come to play on the beach!

Some people consider the portion of the beach north of Black Rock to be the southern end of Airport Beach (a/k/a North Beach and also Kahekili Beach Park). Others (especially the marketing folks) call the whole beach, including the portion north of Black Rock, Ka'anapali Beach. Of course it's completely up to you what you want to call it, as long as people know where to meet you for a swim!

Ka'anapali was the first planned resort on Maui, developed in the 1950's when the island was a small backwater. There are over 4500 rooms and condominiums in Ka'anapali, most of them within walking distance to the beach. Every activity under the sun is available here, for a price.

Top Beaches

Sunset Beach

Surfers around the world know this famous site for its spectacular winter surf - the waves can be huge, thundering peaks reaching up to 15 to 20 feet.

Wailea Beach

Wailea beach is long and wide, with good swimming and snorkeling. When waves are present, this area is also good for bodysurfing.

Secret Beach

Secret Beach, hidden away from the road up from Kapaa, is among Kauai's best-looking beaches, though swimming is usually unsafe.

Kalapaki Beach

Kalapaki Beach fronts the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club as well as the Kauai Lagoons championship golfcourse. The crescent-shaped sand beach opens out to Nawilwili Bay, the Harbor and the Hoary Head Mountains.

Murphy Beach

George Murphy Beach Park (shortened to Murphy Beach Park over the years), but some old-timers still call it Kumimi Beach, and, just to make things really confusing, some people call it Jaycees Park.

Papohaku Beach

Papohaku Beach is one of the longest and finest beaches in the Hawaiian Islands. This beach extends over three miles of coastline and is more than 300 yards wide.

White Sand Beach

Snorkeling and scuba diving are excellent due to the easy ocean access, large fish, and underwater caves.

Waimea Beach

Waimea Bay Beach Park is home of the largest, dangerous, most spectacular, ridable surf in the world.

Kailua Beach

Kailua Beach is a world-class wind surfing destination.There are several shops in Kailua town which offer rental gear and that can arrange for lessons.

Lanikai Beach

Lanikai Beach, along Mokulua Drive, is regarded as Hawaii's best swimming beach by Oahu's residents, and once voted as the America's best beach by famous Dr. Beach
