Hawaii Papohaku Beach Guide

Hawaii's longest white sand beach is on Molokai. Yes that's right and if you want seclusion, Papohaku Beach is the spot. On the west end of Molokai, Papohaku Beach seldom has more than a few visitors on any given day and the beach is large enough to hold the entire population of Molokai without even getting crowded. The wind can kick up a bit and the sea is usually too rough for swimmers. For this reason, you may find yourself all alone or with a special friend, if you decide to make it to Papohaku Beach. A great place to get a good sun tan, take a stroll along the beach or just relax.

Papohaku Beach is as close as you can get to the deserted tropical island of your dreams. Located on the west end of Molokai, which itself is between Oahu and Maui, Papohaku Beach also offers swimming, snorkeling, bodysurfing, body boarding, and surfing. This is the beach where you leave your troubles behind and get away from the world. On this remote beach on this remote island, the only footprints in the sand may be your own.

This is where the sun shines brightly, and few cars compete with you for space on the roads. The pavement on Kaluakoi is fractured like eggshells, and it creaks as you roll over it. It can be ridden safely, but the broken pavement prevents you from really picking up speed. Things to see: Papohaku Beach Park, views of Oahu's east shore, West Molokai mountains.

Papohaku Beach on West Molokai is one of the largest sandy beaches in Hawaii. Over three miles long, the beach is usually quite empty. Beach facilities include restrooms, showers, drinking water and picnic facilities. There are no lifeguards on duty and sometimes the waves are too big for swimming, especially in the winter.

How to Get There
Papohaku Beach is located along Kaluakoi Road on West Molokai, Hawaii. From Highway 460 turn right on Kaluakoi Road before you reach Maunaloa. Papohaku Beach is situated two miles past the Kaluakoi Resort entrance.

Annual Hula on the Beach
The Ka Hula Piko Festival is an annual hula event that takes place at Papohaku Beach Park every May. The festival features a free outdoor concert that lasts all day. The event attracts hula schools from all of Hawaii, comedians, food-sellers and Hawaiian musicians.

Sunset Beach

Surfers around the world know this famous site for its spectacular winter surf - the waves can be huge, thundering peaks reaching up to 15 to 20 feet.

Wailea Beach

Wailea beach is long and wide, with good swimming and snorkeling. When waves are present, this area is also good for bodysurfing.

Secret Beach

Secret Beach, hidden away from the road up from Kapaa, is among Kauai's best-looking beaches, though swimming is usually unsafe.

Kalapaki Beach

Kalapaki Beach fronts the Kauai Marriott Resort and Beach Club as well as the Kauai Lagoons championship golfcourse. The crescent-shaped sand beach opens out to Nawilwili Bay, the Harbor and the Hoary Head Mountains.

Murphy Beach

George Murphy Beach Park (shortened to Murphy Beach Park over the years), but some old-timers still call it Kumimi Beach, and, just to make things really confusing, some people call it Jaycees Park.

Papohaku Beach
