Hawaii Sunset Beach Guide
Sunset Beach is approximately two mile long
with a summer average width of over 200 feet, making it the
widest white sand beach on Oahu. The portion of the beach
fronting the beach [park is approximately one mile long. During
the winter months high surf erodes the beach and narrows it
considerable. Park facilities include portable restrooms and
roadside parking.
One of the longest sand beaches in Oahu running two miles
in length and 200-300 feet wide. In the Summer when the ocean
is calm, this beach has crystal clear water and beautiful
white sand. The area is great for swimming and snorkeling.
There is also wonderful tide pools great for collecting shells
and observing the wonders of nature. During the Winter months
this beach is one of the best for surfing with waves often
between fifteen and twenty feet high making it perfect for
yearly international surfing competitions.
Sunset Beach is considered by many to be Oahu’s
most romantic beach, perfect for a tropical sunset wedding.
Located on the dramatic north shore of Oahu, Sunset Beach
is approximately an hour and twenty minutes from Waikiki.
Sunset Beach is one of three of the prime surfing areas on
Oahu, where in wintertime waves sometimes reach an amazing
25 – 50 feet. These challenging breaks are part of the area’s
annual Triple Crown of Surfing, which is one of the most competitive
surfing events in Hawaii. Sunset Beach is also a popular beach
for wind surfing. Other activities near the area include swimming,
snorkeling, golf, horseback riding, hiking and almost any
other kind of outdoor sport you can imagine. The historic
town of Haleiwa is approximately an 8 minute drive away, and
you are also just minutes from Turtle Bay with it’s exclusive
golf, tennis and restaurants. The world famous Waimea Falls
is just one mile from Sunset Beach. For the ultimate in relaxation,

During the summer months, Sunset Beach is a popular roadside
swimming stop for visitors circling the island, but its major
attraction is its surfing waves during the winter months.
Sunset Beach is one of the best surfing sites in the world,
especially for big waves over ten feet high. It is the home
of the Triple Crown of Surfing, one of the premier events
on the professional surfing tour, and is the preferred site
for many other surfing contests. Surfers the world over consider
Sunsets waves to be among the most dangerous and challenging
they have ever ridden.

High surf generates dangerous water conditions, including
powerful shorebreaks, longshore currents, rip currents, and
backwashes sweeping across the foreshore. The high surf season
normally occurs during the winter and spring months, beginning
in October and ending in May. Lifeguards are on duty daily.

Cautions while going to Sunset Beach:
Be careful of the Sunset Rip, a notorious riptide current
off shore. Take caution during the Winter months when waves
can reach heights of twenty five feet. From June through September
there are incidents of stinging limu (seaweed). Obey all postings
and warnings.
