Hawaii Waimanalo Beach Guide
Located in the center of the 75-acre Waimanalo Bay Recreation
Area, this long, white beach is very popular among tourists
and residents alike. The sandy beach slopes gently into the
ocean providing a wonderful area for swimming and other water
recreation.
As the sun peeks above the horizon, its rays
first hit the Eastern side of Oahu, making Waimanalo the perfect place to catch
the day’s first light. Enjoy the warm Hawaiian sun as it rises to greet the islands
for another gorgeous day in paradise.
Waimanalo Bay Beach Park is located
in the center of Waimanalo Beach, one of the longest white sand beaches on Oahu.
The entire beach is over three miles long, but the portion of it fronting the
park is approximately three-quarters of a mile long. The beach is wide, and the
ocean bottom slopes gently to overhead depths across a series of shallow sandbars.
Small, one-to two-foot high trade wind-generated surf breaks on the sandbars all
year round. Facilities in the seventy-five acre park include restrooms, showers,
picnic tables, camping sites, and parking. Permits are required for camping. Lifeguards
are on duty daily.
Waimanalo Bay Beach Park is one of Oahu most popular
family beach parks because of its close proximity to urban Honolulu and suburban
Kailua and Kaneohe. The small, consistent shorebreak provides excellent bodysurfing
and bodyboarding opportunities for children and other novice wave riders, and
the park offers good sites for picnicking and camping among its many ironwood
trees.
A few of the many activities at Waimanalo are beachcombing, bodyboarding,
bodysurfing, fishing, surfing and swimming.
The windward side of Oahu,
including all of Waimanalo Beach, is famous for its stinging jellyfish, the Portuguese
man-of-war. If you are susceptible to allergic reactions from bee and other insect
stings, you should expect the same reactions from man-of-war stings. Check with
a lifeguard before going in the water to find out if it is a man-of-war day. If
no lifeguard is on duty, look at the debris line on the beach and see if there
are any man-of-war in it. If there are, you may want to reconsider going in the
water. At night, the single road into the park is chained, so if you are not camping
and you plan to stay after sunset, be sure to note the park hours on the sign
as you enter.
