Taipei to build an artificial sand beach
Taipei - Taipei, inspired by the popular artificial beaches in Paris, announced plans on Monday to build a small sand beach - not along a river but around a square.
"We plan to build a sand beach around that square in September so that Taipei residents, especially children, have to place to relax, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-pin told reporters.
"If the plans succeeds, we will build artificial beaches in other parts of Taipei," he said.
Hau wants to build man-made sand beaches in Taipei squares or parks as well as on the banks of some rivers that run through or pass Taipei which, has a high population density of 2,6 million.
Taiwan is surrounded by the sea but lacks good beaches as the island rises steeply out the sea. The nearest sand beach to Taipei is the Shanlun Beach at Tamsui, an hour's drive from the city centre.
For the past five years Paris has transformed the banks of the River Seine into a man-made beach complete with deck chairs, parasols and tropical plants. - Sapa-DPA
