Pulau Sibu Beautiful Beaches
Sibu Island is one of Malaysia’s unspoiled islands off the Peninsula’s East Coast, facing the South China Sea. Approximately 6 km long and 1km wide, the island abounds with lush tropical vegetation, and is noted for its beaches, hills, cliffs and exotic bird population. On the Southern end there is a small fishing village with a population of less than a hundred people. Facing Pulau Sibu on the west is the majestic Pulau Tinggi and a few smaller uninhabited islands. Almost untouched by progress, Sibu Island is the perfect hideaway from the rat of city life
There are two types of bungalows accommodation at the resort, all with a sea view. The Cabanas Chalets are semi-detached air-conditioned bungalows, whilst the LaBamba Chalets are single unit Malay Style thatched bungalows with large verandah and overhead fans. Both types are furnished with king-size beds with an extra single bed. Bathroom are en-suite for all chalets. Top sheets, soap and towels are also provided.
The main activities on the island are snorkelling and diving. However one can take walks in the jungle to the fishing village or to the other resorts. There are pathways to most of these places. At the resort, indoor activities such as table and board games are provided. A mini library is also available. Outdoors, one can go canoeing, ride the banana boat, play badminton and beach volleyball. Fishing trips are regularly organized for the avid fishermen. Boat trips to the other islands can be arranged at the resort.
Pulau Sibu Island is amidst the Seribuat chain of islands; it is shaped like an hour glass, and is roughly 6km in length and less than 1km in width.
Pulau Sibu Island has some well known neighbouring islands, for example Pulau Besaar (22km North), Pulau Tingi (9km NE), Pulau Tioman (54km N), Pulau Rawa (31km NW) and Pulau Aur (55km NW).
Getting to Pulau Sibu Island by air
The closest Airports to get to Pulau Sibu Island are either Senai Airport in Johor Bahru (Capital city of Johor State) or Changi Airport in Singapore.
Upon arrival we can easily arrange a pick up either by taxi or mini van.
By road
There are 2 choices, either the Woodlands Causeway or the second link (Tuas).
Pulau Sibu is a pleasant hideaway with its lush tropical vegetation, endless stretches of golden beaches and clear blue waters. The island is also dotted with numerous sea caves carved out of rocks. The constant pounding of the sea during the monsoon season has given the island a beautiful yet rugged appearance.
The surrounding waters contain fascinating coral reefs teeming with colourful marine life. Shipwrecks off its coast can also be found. In the olden days, Chinese junks and pirate vessels often exchanged cannon fire around this island, and the remains of these battles lie scattered around the seabed.
There are facilities for scuba diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing and angling. Visitors can go for a hike through the jungle leading to unspoilt mangrove swamps or visit the kelong, or jetty, where anchovies are caught. Alternatively, head for the kampong, or village, to get a first-hand look at how coconuts are smoked to make copra.
Key Tips
If you are travelling with children or you are not a strong swimmer, choose to stay on a beach on the western side of the island where the sea is calmer, as you can avoid exposure to the South China Sea here
How to get there
By Road and Sea
You can catch a boat ride to Sibu Island from Tanjung Leman jetty, south of Mersing. From Mersing town, travel south along the Mersing - Kota Tinggi (Highway 3) trunk road for about 44km and turn left. The road passes through an oil palm plantation, and is narrow and winding in certain parts. From Johor Bahru, head for Kota Tinggi town. From Kota Tinggi town, travel north on the Kota Tinggi - Mersing trunk road (Highway 3) for 48km and turn right to the same junction mentioned above. Pulau Sibu is about 20 minutes' boat ride from Tanjung Leman.
